Siemens wins the €88 million contract to supply the congestion charging system to London from 2007. The Siemens system will recognize the number plates locally and only transmit the recognized numbers or pictures of problematic number plates to administrative center. The system will be expected to recognize about 1 million number plates pr day. The Western Extension Zone project will see London’s current congestion charge area extended in a westerly direction into Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea. Work will now begin on the new scheme which is scheduled to be effective from February 2007. Siemens will operate and maintain the enforcement infrastructure until 2016.
